O Programa Ambiente é o Meio desta semana conversa com Glaucia Mendes Souza, professora titular do Instituto de Química da Universidade de São Paulo (USP) e coordena o Bioen_Fapesp, programa de pesquisa em bioenergia da Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa do Estado de São Paulo (Fapesp).

Para melhorar a biodiversidade em biocombustível no Brasil, Gláucia trabalha há 20 anos com a manipulação genética da cana-de-açúcar, o biocombustível mais presente no País, desenvolvendo essa matéria prima a partir de novos conhecimentos tecnológicos. E, nesta edição do podcast, apresenta aos ouvintes um pouco sobre as pesquisas que seu laboratório desenvolve.

Fala das possibilidades de uso de biomassas no esquema de biorrefinarias, substituindo o petróleo por bioprodutos; o que, segundo a pesquisadora, traria diversos benefícios, tanto econômicos quanto ambientais.

Glaucia adianta que “para manter a temperatura da terra abaixo de um aumento de um grau e meio”, será necessário triplicar a produção de biocombustíveis no mundo até 2050. É nesse sentido que a professora defende as alternativas de substituição energéticas; mas adverte que, apesar de necessárias e já estarem à disposição, as tecnologias para substituir o petróleo precisam ser mais baratas, do contrário “quem é que vai pagar” por elas?

Nesse contexto, Glaucia apresenta sua metodologia de pesquisa, informando que realizou mapeamento de locais onde já existiam políticas de implementação de biocombustíveis, como o Brasil, a Argentina, a Colômbia e a Guatemala. Comenta que sua equipe realiza “análise do ciclo de vida” que começa com a produção do biocombustível e vai até o uso final do produto. Segundo a professora, com as informações, são capazes de medir as emissões dos gases de efeito estufa de todo o ciclo de vida daquele biocombustível.
