Hard-Hearted

Hard-Hearted Mark 6:45-52

The disciples were fighting for their lives when Jesus came walking on top of the very thing that was trying to kill them! The reaction of the disciples is a sign of a hard heart. Indicators of a hard heart: Carey Nieuwhof 1. You don’t really celebrate, and you don’t really cry. 2. You stop genuinely caring. 3. So much of what’s supposed to be meaningful feels mechanical. 4. Passion is hard to come by. 5. You no longer believe the best about people. Greatest example of a hard heart: Pharoah-Fifteen times the scripture mentions his heart being hardened. A hard heart dulls a person’s ability to perceive and understand. Jesus gave five characteristics of a hard heart in Mark 8:17-18 1. Unable to perceive 2. Unable to understand 3. Unable to see 4. Unable to hear 5. Unable to remember When people are hard-hearted toward God, often they are spiritually blind and deaf. Things that determine the sensitivity of our heart. 1. What we consider, our heart becomes softened toward. It wasn’t sin that caused the disciples hearts to be hard, it was their focus on things than the miracle Jesus had just preformed. If the disciples had been thinking spiritually instead of naturally, they would have known Jesus would take care of them. 2. If we were not so dominated by considering the natural, we would not be so surprised by the supernatural. Our hearts become hardened toward God and His supernatural power because of our failure to stay focused on spiritual things. 3. We have the power to determine what our heart accepts or rejects. Control our thoughts and we will control our actions. Truth: If we live in a graveyard too long, we stop crying when someone dies. 4. Hard-hearted people are often the way they are because something happened to make them broken-hearted people. Hard hearted people are not bad people, they are broken people. To heal a hard heart, it must become broken again!
