Doctors Without Borders, or MSF, has suspended its activities at one of the few hospitals still operating in Sudan’s capital because of attacks from fighters in Sudan’s conflict. We take a look at the significance of Somalia and Ethiopia’s restoration of diplomatic ties. One of the world’s biggest steelmakers, ArcelorMittal, says it will stop operating in South Africa at the end of January, and industry experts expect Africa’s largest economy could lose 100,000 jobs as a result.

The world continues to seek a way to halt the conflict in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, even as there are reports the M23 rebels are moving south beyond Goma. A reporter in Goma, the largest city in the eastern DRC, reports many areas are relatively calm. The Trump administration has ordered a three-month pause on almost all foreign development assistance pending a review, but aid groups and human rights watchdogs warn the move will put lives at risk.…
 
The UN says hundreds of people have been wounded and bodies are lying in the streets of Goma after the M23 rebel group advanced on the eastern DRC city. Paul Nantulya, research associate with the Africa Center for Strategic Studies tells VOA's Carol Van Dam that to understand the social and political origins of M23, one has to go back to the first and second Congo wars and even the Ugandan civil war which ended in 1986.…
 
Fighting continues in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, but in the parts where M23 rebels have control, they are telling residents that they are not bad people and are there to liberate them. United Nations agencies warn fierce fighting between M23 rebels and Democratic Republic of Congo troops in and around the eastern city of Goma is creating a protection crisis of huge proportions. Amid fighting between M23 rebels and government forces in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, some organizations are relocating staff because they no longer feel safe. The M23 says it has taken control of Goma – the largest city in the Democratic Republic of Congo’s east, and aid workers say hundreds of thousands of Congolese fled the city over the weekend. South Africa’s president says he is confident in his country’s relationship with the U.S. under the new Trump administration, although Secretary of State Marco Rubio has not been specific about Africa policy.…
