EP 173: ANGRY BLACK WOMAN
Manage episode 424505898 series 3517536
You wanna make an angry black woman more angry? Call her an angry black Woman amd that’s exactly what you’ll get. But what really lies beneath what appears to be a hard exterior of our melanin dripping queens when they seem to be on ten and feels nobody listening? Maybe that’s just it. Nobody’s listening.
If you’ve ever been to therapy (and if you haven’t, what are you waiting for?), then you’ve probably been told anger is a secondary emotion. What this really means is it’s something deeper when someone appears to be angry. Are they sad, frustrated, disappointed, heartbroken? Any of these emotions can be the root from which the angered emotions sprouted. So why aren’t black women asked how they’re feeling instead of too often being labeled?
In the boardrooms, we hear whispers about black women in power who aren’t afraid to say no and also aren’t afraid to reject being told no if they know it isn’t fair. Why is this labeled as anger instead of assertiveness? Or even powerful? To be bold enough to stand shoulder to shoulder with those viewed as giants is an act of bravery. Not one of aggression or anger.
Let’s be real. Some women are angry. White, black, brown, or otherwise, they’re human and have emotions. Lots of them! But the Karens of the world have been having tantrums since forever and I’ve never heard the phrase “angry
White woman”. Things that make you go hmmmm.
So what can we do to change the narrative? How can we ensure that black women are applauded for the power and prestige and not judged because they won’t be walked John? We can’t fix the world but we can share our thoughts as we always do.
