Have you ever considered that your tears might have nothing to do with your circumstances? That your physical pain isn't caused by how you slept last night? That your hangover isn't from alcohol?
Lesson 301 from A Course in Miracles, "And God Himself shall wipe away all tears," offers a radical perspective that turns our understanding of suffering upside down. Through Hope Johnson's gentle guidance, we discover that judgment—not external events—is the root cause of all our sorrow. The lesson states plainly: "Unless I judge, I cannot weep." This simple yet profound insight places the power to end suffering back where it belongs—in our own minds.
When we believe someone has hurt us or that circumstances have caused our pain, we're actually misunderstanding what's happening. We're giving away our power to illusions. As Hope explains, "Pain is not caused by anything in the world, but by judgments we place upon the world." This doesn't mean denying our experiences, but rather seeing them through new eyes—eyes unclouded by judgment.
Forgiveness emerges as the doorway to what the Course calls "God's happy world." Not the conventional forgiveness where we pardon wrongdoing, but a profound shift in perception where we recognize that nothing real has occurred to hurt us. Through forgiveness, we remove "the filters of fear and grievance" and see with "happy eyes."
Perhaps most liberating is the realization that we cannot truly hurt one another. The belief that we can harm or be harmed is part of the illusion. When we release judgment, we discover a world that's "peaceful, kind, radiant" and where "there's nothing that can hurt me."
Ready to practice this transformative teaching? Start by catching yourself in judgment, recognizing it as the source of your pain, and choosing to let it go. Watch as joy naturally takes its place. Your tears will be forgotten, for their source is gone.
