The War and Treaty’s Michael and Tanya Trotter grew up in Cleveland, Ohio, and Washington, DC, respectively, but both have family roots in the South. They also grew up in the musical traditions of their churches – Tanya in the Black Baptist Church and Michael in the Seventh Day Adventist Church – where they learned the power of song to move people. After becoming a father at a very young age, Michael eventually joined the armed forces and served in Iraq and Germany, where he took up songwriting as a way of dealing with his experiences there. Meanwhile Tanya embarked on a singing and acting career after a breakthrough appearance in Sister Act 2 alongside Whoopi Goldberg and Lauryn Hill. Now, after a long and sometimes traumatic journey, Michael and Tanya are married, touring, winning all sorts of awards, and set to release their fifth album together, and their fourth as The War and Treaty. Sid talks to Michael and Tanya about the new record, Plus One , as well as their collaboration with Miranda Lambert, what it was like to record at FAME studios in Muscle Shoals, and how they’re blending country, soul, gospel, and R&B. ×Hey there, fellow pickleball enthusiasts! Today, I want to dive into the exciting world of pickleball and share some beginner-friendly rules to help you get started. Whether you're a newbie to the game or just need a refresher, these nine simple guidelines will have you swinging and smashing like a pro in no time. So, let's grab our paddles and jump right in! 1. Find a court and gather your gear: First things first, you'll need to locate a pickleball court in your area. Look for local parks, community centers, or sports clubs that offer pickleball facilities. Once you've got your court sorted, equip yourself with a paddle, comfortable clothing, and a pair of supportive shoes. Trust me, the right gear can make a world of difference! 2. Serve it up, my friend: The serve is where it all begins. Stand behind the baseline and let that ball fly! Remember, the serve must be underhand and made diagonally across the net. Aim for a high, arching shot that lands beyond the opponent's kitchen (the non-volley zone). Practice makes perfect, so keep honing your serving skills. 3. Stay out of the kitchen: Speaking of the kitchen, this area is vital to understand. The kitchen is a seven-foot space on both sides of the net, and you're not allowed to step inside it unless the ball bounces in it first. This rule keeps the game fair and challenges players to strategize their shots effectively. 4. Keep the volley going: Once the ball is in play, get ready for some fast-paced volley action! Hit the ball before it bounces and keep the rally alive. Remember, the ball must clear the net and land within the court boundaries. Stay light on your feet and prepare for quick reactions. 5. Mind your boundaries: Pickleball courts have designated boundaries, and hitting the ball outside those lines counts as an "out" shot. If you're playing doubles, make sure to communicate with your partner to avoid confusion and ensure the ball stays in play. Stay focused, and those boundaries won't stand a chance! 6. No smashing in the kitchen: Okay, I know we all love a good smash, but remember that smashes are off-limits when you're within the kitchen. Keep your power shots outside that area. Trust me, your opponents won't appreciate a powerful hit straight from the kitchen! 7. Communicate with your partner: If you're playing doubles, teamwork is key. Communicate with your partner to coordinate shots and cover the court effectively. A little conversation can go a long way in outsmarting your opponents and winning those crucial points. 8. Be patient and strategize: Pickleball is a game of strategy. Don't rush your shots or take unnecessary risks. Observe your opponents, anticipate their moves, and plan your shots accordingly. Remember, patience pays off in the long run. 9. Have fun and embrace the learning process: Last but not least, enjoy the game and embrace the learning process. Pickleball is meant to be a fun and social activity. Don't get too caught up in winning or losing—focus on improving your skills, making new friends, and having a blast on the court. Remember, every great player was once a beginner! There you have it, my friends—nine simple rules to help you dive headfirst into the fantastic world of pickleball. I hope this guide encourages you to pick up that paddle, step onto the court, and unleash your inner pickleball superstar. So, go out there, have a smashing time, and enjoy the game! Until next time, keep swinging and keep smiling!…
