On this episode of Advances in Care , host Erin Welsh and Dr. Craig Smith, Chair of the Department of Surgery and Surgeon-in-Chief at NewYork-Presbyterian and Columbia discuss the highlights of Dr. Smith’s 40+ year career as a cardiac surgeon and how the culture of Columbia has been a catalyst for innovation in cardiac care. Dr. Smith describes the excitement of helping to pioneer the institution’s heart transplant program in the 1980s, when it was just one of only three hospitals in the country practicing heart transplantation. Dr. Smith also explains how a unique collaboration with Columbia’s cardiology team led to the first of several groundbreaking trials, called PARTNER (Placement of AoRTic TraNscatheteR Valve), which paved the way for a monumental treatment for aortic stenosis — the most common heart valve disease that is lethal if left untreated. During the trial, Dr. Smith worked closely with Dr. Martin B. Leon, Professor of Medicine at Columbia University Irving Medical Center and Chief Innovation Officer and the Director of the Cardiovascular Data Science Center for the Division of Cardiology. Their findings elevated TAVR, or transcatheter aortic valve replacement, to eventually become the gold-standard for aortic stenosis patients at all levels of illness severity and surgical risk. Today, an experienced team of specialists at Columbia treat TAVR patients with a combination of advancements including advanced replacement valve materials, three-dimensional and ECG imaging, and a personalized approach to cardiac care. Finally, Dr. Smith shares his thoughts on new frontiers of cardiac surgery, like the challenge of repairing the mitral and tricuspid valves, and the promising application of robotic surgery for complex, high-risk operations. He reflects on life after he retires from operating, and shares his observations of how NewYork-Presbyterian and Columbia have evolved in the decades since he began his residency. We apologize-in-advance kind of jokes… A few mentions: Ruby's Arcade - Why did the pizza cross the road? To get to the other slice of town. https://rubysarcade.com/…

Our next podcast will be our 100th show! In the meantime, we asked our Artificial Intelligence overlords to listen to some of what we have done and tell us what it “thinks” about the Tuesday night show, Ruby’s Arcade, and of course, Bingo is Life: The Post-Bingo Harrisonburg Podcast. “Kind of a secret society of creative weirdos hiding in plain sight” is a favorite line. The entire podcast is AI generated from the voices to all the word choices. Let us know if you think they got it right! Thanks, as always, to our wonderful sponsor: Ruby's Arcade! https://rubysarcade.com/…

Welcome to this, our third season of this silly podcast! We always love to invite someone special for the first-of-the-year show. And when that person cancels, we like to invite Christian Perritt to join us again. Frankly, he doesn't have a whole lot going on and just needs something to do. Thats Perritt with two R's and two T's - for twice the rollicking and double the trouble. I think he has business cards that say just that. Enjoy! Happy New Year! For this week’s episode, we are sharing a little recording we did mid October. Interestingly, this is what happens when we have no guests and Mumshackles is sadly away… Just four guys at a round table in Harrisonburg. Our conversation includes such topics as, Optimus AI robots, the MLB pitch clock, and Marshall McLuhan of course. What a silly way to end this silly year! A special episode! We talk about a new album from the band, Basement Rebellion. Chris and his son, Oliver, join Mike in talking all about their new album. Our guest Steve Winegard is eclectic to say the least. From being a stuntman, acting in soap operas, serving as a ski instructor guru, working as a bar manager, and directing plays - let's just say he has some stories! Getting into a scuffle with Jack Wagner from General Hospital? Check. Having his face run over in a stunt accident? Also check. Seeing John Prine perform and watching Bonnie Rait drink her friends under the table in Harrisonburg? Sure, why not share that story too. A few mentions: Ruby’s Arcade - I might fall from a tall buildin’, I might roll a brand-new car. ‘Cause I’m the unknown stuntman that made Bingo such a star. https://rubysarcade.com/ Martha Woodroof interview with Steve - https://www.wmra.org/the-spark/2014-12-19/a-stunting-past Steve talks of when he gets his head run over - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aqFzNGxRWgo in the movie, “The Order of the Black Eagle” - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0199912/ Steve directs “12 Angry Jurrors” at Court Square Theater - https://courtsquaretheater.org/event/12-angry-jurors/2024-12-05/ Elbow Room Harrisonburg - Facebook Group - https://www.facebook.com/groups/66596702088…
