Written in the 6th century by an impressive Chinese general, Sun Tzu writes the most impressive military strategy book to date. Not only a book about war, but more a cleverly written tale of human psychology. Knowing people and knowing yourself promotes maximum results. There is no instance of a country having benefited from prolonged warfare Things to Consider 5 Dangerous Faults of a General Recklessness - leads to destruction Cowardice - leads to capture Hasty temper - provoked by insults Delicacy of honor - which is sensitive to shame Over solicitude for his men - which exposes him to worry and trouble Know yourself, know thy enemy Exploit enemy weaknesses, avoid his strengths If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle.” Warfare is based on deception, elusiveness. Don’t show your hand too early, but when you do strike and strike fast. The battle is won in the mind long before it is won on the field. Proper Pre-Planning Study the well being of your men, be a skillful tactician Walk into familiarity Plan for the best, expect the worst Get up early, soldier spirit is high in the morning, by noonday its has begun to flag and in the evening his mind is only on returning to camp Invest in great people! The program was made by Jordan B Peterson and a group of clinical and research psychologists who believe that writing exercises such as those presented on the Self Authoring Suite can help people confront their past, understand and improve their personalities in the present, and increase the chances that their futures will be meaningful, productive and healthy. The Suite Helps individuals write out a life plan through 6 dimensions of life (health, mental wellness, family, career, education, and physical wellness). To view the Self Authoring suite, head to https://www.selfauthoring.com/ Note If you haven’t listened to Self Authoring Pt. 1 (Season 1 Episode 4) yet, please go back and listen to that episode first. There are two Present Authoring exercises. These are the Present Authoring - Faults exercise and the Present Authoring - Virtues exercise. These exercises have been designed to allow you to do an in-depth analysis of the negative and positive elements of your personality, that is, your faults and your virtues, respectively. The present authoring is reminiscent of Myers Briggs, where you learn more about your own personality and figure out how you can improve. Everybody's personality is composed of two higher-order traits. The first higher-order trait is known as plasticity, and can be thought of as the tendency to be flexible, exploratory, curious and quick to adapt. The second higher-order trait is known as stability, and can be thought of as the tendency to be structured, organized, emotionally stable and focused. Plasticity, the first higher-order trait, can be further broken down into two sub-traits: Extroversion (the tendency to be enthusiastic and dominant) and Openness (the tendency to be open-minded and intelligent). Stability Stability, the second higher-order trait, can be further broken down into three sub-traits: Conscientiousness (the tendency to be orderly and industrious), Emotional Stability (lack of negative emotional volatility and the tendency to withdraw), and Agreeableness (politeness and compassion, as opposed to belligerence or aggression). Impact of Personality Traits There are advantages and disadvantages to each trait, particularly at the extremes. Extremely sociable, extroverted people can be dominant and impulsive, while introverted, quiet people can easily become isolated and depressed. Extremely open people can be scattered and overwhelmed by their own thoughts and ideas, while closed-minded people may become narrow and inflexible. Exceptionally conscientious people can be obsessive about order, judgmental and rigid, while their more carefree counterparts may be messy, undisciplined and careless. People very high in emotional stability may engage in risky, dangerous behavior, while those who are more neurotic can become so preoccupied by anxiety and pain that they are unable to function. Finally, extremely agreeable people may never stand up for themselves, while those who are too assertive can be aggressive, callous and bullying. Change Personality is reasonably stable over the lifespan, and is also powerfully influenced by hereditary or genetic factors. Despite this, personality can broaden or even transform. As people age, for example, they tend to become more agreeable, conscientious and emotionally stable. Changing personality means changing habits of action, presumption and perception. Personality change requires the formulation of clear future goals, as well as discipline and practice. People who are too agreeable can learn to stand up for themselves. Disorderly people can become more conscientious. Introverted people can become socially skilled. People who experience paralyzing levels of negative emotion can learn to explore. Virtues and Faults In the Suite, you will outline how each trait has benefited you in a negative a positive way. This will allow you to learn more about your good traits and your bad traits in DEPTH. Deep analyzation of traits can lead to adjustment and improvement of the trait.…
Brian and Nsima dive into Deep Work by Cal Newport to understand techniques to perform professional activities with a sense of distraction free concentration and get better results. Two necessary skills in today’s knowledge economy, the ability to quickly master hard things, the ability to produce at an elite level, in terms of quality and speed. Biggest takeaway? Set wildly important goals and track your progress towards achievement. Definitions Deep work hypothesis - the ability to perform deep work is becoming increasingly rare at exactly the same time it is becoming increasingly valuable in our economy. As a consequence, the few who cultivate this skill, and then make it the core of their working life, will thrive. Shallow work - non demanding tasks that we can perform while distracted, doesn’t added new value to the world and easy to replicate High quality work produced = time spent x intensity of focus Approaches to Deep Work Monastic approach - shutting yourself off from the world. Examples would be JK Rowling when writing one of her HP books. Comes from the word monastery, where monks live. Bimodal Approach - Have a set amount of time each day for deep work, similar to monastic, but once done, you can do whatever you’d like. Deep work is still prioritized. Rhythmic Approach - Still planned and scheduled, but it turns your work into a habit. Set a timer, and get work done, similar to the pomodoro technique and Cal proposes one use a calendar to track progress (similar to Jerry Seinfeld). Journalistic approach - Literally do what you can when you can. Have a spontaneous block of 20 minutes to get done? Dive deep in those 20 minutes. Have 2 hours when the kids fall asleep? Dive deep in those 2 hours. For those that are super busy, this can work well. New Habits We’re Trying Out Say ‘no’ to any tasks that detract you from your key goals (eliminate time sucks). At the start of your day, schedule actual deep work time before anyone comes in. This blocks off your schedule for actual concentration that doesn’t get hijacked by meetings or shallow work. Tabulate your day down to the minute! Although this may be ludicrous, planning out your day to the minute allows you to be clear about what needs to get done. If life happens and you have to adapt, simply shift your schedule to accommodate. Get a phone tracker app! In this show, we mentioned the Moment app. But since airing, there are a lot of different ways to monitor your smartphone use, see below: For iPhone users, Apple came out with Screen Time - which monitors what apps you use while Downtime gives you the opportunity to schedule for time away from the screen. For all users: Another dope app is called Forest which helps you stay focused and off your smartphone. The longer you focus, the more your tree will grow. Considerations Use deep work for big ideas, knowledge work, and creativity. Remove distractions so that you can work deeply and produce something unique and of extreme value. What does your work space look like? Is it distraction free or distraction laden? Open office layouts are better suited for collaboration but do come at the cost of major distraction. Focus on 1-2 wildly important goals. Set smart routines and habits. Keep a compelling scoreboard how many hours of deep work completed and how many needed to complete certain tasks. Eliminate social media. Be lazy, ideless is necessary, Shut down work until the next morning, no schemes, shut down so you can be efficient the next days,…
Nsima and Brian discuss Ted Talks: The Official TED Guide to Public Speaking and explore ways to better engage any audience. It is essential that you understand your audience and the people you will be speaking to before setting up your speech or presentation. Disarm yourself and show your vulnerability to really connect with your audience. Idea 1 - Make a throughline A Throughline, which is "a connecting theme that ties together each narrative element. Every talk should have one." You should be able to summarize a throughline in less than 15 words and it's ideal that it has some bit of unexpectedness in them. With body language, you can fake it till you become it. More choice actually makes us less happy. Terrible city flags can reveal surprising design secrets. Idea 2 - Make the Idea Now that you have a throughline you can build your speech or presentation upon it. Here are the the tools that were outlined within the Ted Guide to Public speaking along with some speeches that used these tools. Connection, Narration, Persuasion, Explanation, Revelation Connection- Getting personal Rules from Tom Riley +Tell anecdotes relative to subject matter, the best humor is things around you + Have a funny remark ready if you flub your words, or if things gets messed up Build humor into potential visuals. Lawrence Lessig - We the people and the republic we must reclaim Malcolm Gladwell - Choice, Happiness, and spaghetti sauce PERSUASION You need to show them their assumption is wrong, and yours is right, rebuild something better in the listeners mind. PRIMING Prime the listeners mind with examples before you make your point Priming could be talking about the problem first. Talk about the problem and WHY it is a problem. “You are the amalgamation of the people you spend the most time with - be cautious of who you let into your life.” “We have the responsibility (to ourselves) to discern which relationships to continue and which to abandon.” “Relationships do not have to be transactional.” How can you create community and add value to all the people in your life in a very immaterial way? Become a convener. Connect the dots by introducing individuals within your network to one another. Cultivating community, when done correctly, should help increase your well being. Don’t neglect time for yourself.…
Nsima speaks about his experience at the IBJJF Worlds Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu tournament. He lost. Failure is extremely important. Many high performance individuals say that some of their greatest failures have led them to their greatest successes. Change the way you look at failure, it happens. If used correctly, it can and will lead to future success. Michael Jordan locked himself in his room and cried after being cut from the high school basketball team. Oprah Winfrey was demoted from her job as a news anchor because she “wasn’t fit for television”. Einstein wasn’t able to speak until he was 4 and teachers said he “wouldn’t amount to much” Understand that when learning or doing something new, you absolutely will fail! As always, we do our best not to fail. Learn from the failure and use that experience, grit your teeth, and continue pushing towards your goal.…
We both found extreme benefit by going through the first part of the program and in this episode the usefulness of the program will be explored in depth. For more information about the program, and to check it out for yourself, go to www.selfauthoring.com. The curriculum was tested on 85 students who were struggling academically at McGill University in Montreal, and the students' collective GPA rose by 29 percent in a single semester. In 2011, the Rotterdam School of Management at Erasmus University in the Netherlands made a portion of the course mandatory for incoming undergraduates. The result: a nearly 10 percent increase in GPA, a 15 percent decrease in dropouts, and the highest-performing cohorts in the history of the school. The Future Authoring Program is designed to help you imagine your ideal future, three to five years down the road. What would your life be like if you could set it up in the manner that would be best for you? Writing things down may unlock certain channels of one’s brain that are dormant, allowing individuals to attach true emotion towards their future goals.…

Nsima speaks about using his time in college to figure out what he wanted in life. After interviewing doctors during his pre-med years, he quickly realized that he needed to figure something else out. Sometimes in life you’ve got to take a leap, but it’s necessary to have a plan. Note : Both Nsima and Brian are strong proponents of higher education and lifelong learning. It is advised many times in this episode that it’s a good idea to have a concrete plan before you LEAVE school and more so before you BEGIN school! In Season 1 Episode 4, Brian and Nsima talk about the Self Authoring Suite by Jordan Peterson which can help individuals figure out their goals.…
Brian discusses his reasons for pursuing higher education. Does your career necessitate a bachelors, masters or doctorate degree? Debt is a big point of contention for many millennials going to college today. Protect your GPA by all means necessary! FAFSA is your best friend. Know what you are in school for. Make a plan and execute. Take advantage of leadership roles in campus life, internships, and mentoring. But don’t miss the opportunity to relax, explore different areas of yourself, and enjoy your undergraduate experience. As Tim Ferriss once said, “Being busy is a form of laziness”. For those of us who don’t prioritize things in their lives, it is easy to get overwhelmed with everything that life brings our way. College is the same way. To succeed in college, I’ve found that I thought about time. Time ownership refers to controlling one’s schedule. Time management refers to managing the time left over after others have had the chance to dictate your schedule. Why should I go to College? Derek Newton, Forbes contributor (tweets linked below) “ … a college graduate is 177 times more likely than a high school graduate to earn $4 million or more throughout their lifetime.” The typical college graduate will earn roughly $900,000 more than the typical high school graduate over their working lives. Keys to Thriving in College Be very forthright about finding avenues of Income. How can i get as much money as You can to pay for school. FAFSA, grants, scholarships, fellowships, work study, research positions, and the old fashioned get a job! Don’t be comfortable. If getting a loan isn’t essential for school fees, don’t do it. Securing a loan to buy clothes or shoes will kick you in the butt later. Don’t take on debt for no reason. Corrections I did have an individual, an architecture professor, who taught at Cal Poly Pomona and extended her architectural insights to me. Her advice, take a leave of absence for a year and come back next year. Work and live then I’ll be more than equipped to graduate. Truthfully, I was too scared to take that chance. Applied to Columbia University for the MPA in Development Practice program. I didn’t get in.…
