This topic was initially recommended to us in May 2019 with the original tweet from @Zahratonin stating “Brown girls should not have to decide between leaving their families for independence or compromising their happiness to appease their families.”

WOW, this is such a loaded statement not just for Pasifika, but also maybe even cultures that have strong religious beliefs with traditionally conservative values. We also wanted to take the moment to mention this discussion will be from the cis-hetero perspective as Pasifika women and that we acknowledge Samoa’s third and fourth gender, fa’afafine and fa’afatama who both have integral roles in a Samoan household from pre-colonisation, up until this day.
