×Part 4: Equanimity – unfolds as we find a wise balance and spaciousness in the midst of this living, dying world. This series reflects on four primary expressions of an awake, wise heart: lovingkindness, compassion, joy and equanimity. In each talk we explore the habitual patterning that blocks our full realization of these innate capacities, and the understandings and practices that nurture their unfolding. In this talk, Tara explores: A Heart Ready for Anything – Practical reflections and meditations to cultivate equanimity in relationships and daily life. The Wisdom of Equanimity – How balance and spacious awareness free us from reactivity and deepen our capacity for love. Equanimity as the Ground for Compassion – The role of equanimity in keeping love from contracting into attachment and compassion from turning into pity. Navigating Emotional Waves – The metaphor of the ocean and waves to cultivate presence amidst life’s inevitable challenges. The Shadow Side of Equanimity – How indifference can masquerade as equanimity and the importance of staying engaged with life. “These are the questions of equanimity: What’s happening right now? Can I be with this? When you ask these questions and really contact what is happening and let it be, you become the ocean that has room for the waves.” The post Equanimity – Part 4 of Present Heart: The Universal Expressions of Love appeared first on Tara Brach .…
We arrive in presence by deepening attention in the body; relaxing and awakening through a body scan. That presence deepens as we bring our attention to the space of awareness that includes the changing flow of sounds, sensations and feelings. In that wholeness of formlessness and form, we discover our natural being – open, awake and tender. This meditation scans through the body, and awakens attention to the open, inclusive awareness that all life arises in. We then explore experiencing that openness in the region of the heart, saying yes to life and including whatever is here with unconditional presence. Peace is this moment without thinking that it should be some other way, that you should feel some other thing, that your life should unfold according to your plans. Peace is this moment without judgment, this moment in the heart-space where everything that is, is welcome. Part 3: Joy – blossoms in the moments our hearts open boundlessly to reality, to the 10,000 joys and sorrows. This series reflects on four primary expressions of an awake, wise heart: lovingkindness, compassion, joy and equanimity. In each talk we explore the habitual patterning that blocks our full realization of these innate capacities, and the understandings and practices that nurture their unfolding. In this talk, Tara explores: • How the “if-only” mind keeps us leaning forward, chasing happiness in the future, rather than discovering the aliveness and freedom available right here, right now • How the trance of “something is wrong” contracts our hearts, and the deep, compassionate presence that can free us to love life just as it is. • The power of mindful presence—how pausing, softening, and truly receiving this moment allows joy to naturally arise. • How gladdening the mind—through gratitude, love, and wonder—can shift our set point for happiness and awaken a deep trust in the unfolding of life. Happiness cannot be found through great effort and willpower, but is already here, right now, in relaxation and letting go. This guided practice helps us come into our senses through a body scan. We then rest in the awareness that is listening to and feeling the changing flow of experience. When the mind drifts, the return is a relaxing back to our senses, and to the sea of awareness that includes and experiences the waves of life. From the meditation closing: As part of closing this meditation, sensing whatever wish or blessing you’d like to offer to yourself right now. What would bring healing happiness your life? Widening that heart space to include someone who is dear to you. Sensing your appreciation for that person’s goodness. Offering your wish, your blessings to them. Sensing the heart as edgeless… boundless… open… including all of life everywhere. May all beings everywhere be filled with loving presence, held in loving presence. May all beings everywhere find great and natural peace. May all beings everywhere be happy, know the natural joy of being alive. May all beings everywhere awaken and be free. Part 2: Compassion – the tender resonance of heart – awakens as we allow ourselves to be touched by our shared vulnerability. This series reflects on four primary expressions of an awake, wise heart: lovingkindness, compassion, joy and equanimity. In each talk we explore the habitual patterning that blocks our full realization of these innate capacities, and the understandings and practices that nurture their unfolding. From the talk: When you witness vulnerability, really feel it in you – let yourself be touched – and when the tenderness comes, when the real visceral tenderness comes, feel it for 15 seconds, 20 seconds, and let yourself marinate in the feeling of tenderness. … As we begin to get more tender and to look and to respond, it’s contagious to people around us. They get touched and then they act that way more. Just the way there’s limbic contagion when people are angry or upset, there’s compassion contagion. … “Just Like You” (Inspired by the Dalai Lama) Walk gently on this earth with purposeful steps You share this space with seven billion human beings And countless other precious life forms Just like you They all want to be happy Just like you They all need love We’re not going to survive unless we walk Gently on this earth together, Until we touch something in others that Feels just like the shards of our own pain, The fluttering warmth of our own joy, Until we sew their wounds into our hearts And seal it with our own skin ~ Just Like You, Kaveri Patel Enjoy the audio and video of Lovingkindness – Part 1 here. This meditation guides us to awaken to our senses through scanning through the body and then listening to sounds. Lovingkindness becomes full when it is energetically experienced in our bodies. This meditation guides us in awakening the receptivity, warmth and openness of metta through our body, and then invites us to rest in the space of loving presence, as we open to whatever arises. Many recognize that love is the antidote to the suffering in our divided world, yet finding the path to an open heart can feel more challenging than ever. This talk explores the full spectrum of love—both tender and open, as well as fierce, protective, and engaged. When we cultivate this courageous love, we are able to hold even those we see as enemies in our hearts. In its true form, this love is not passive or soft. As Martin Luther King Jr. described, it is a powerful soul force, capable of bringing healing and liberation to all beings. In this talk, Tara explores: the power of the “sacred pause”—how presence allows us to open to love in difficult times how mindfulness serves as a powerful tool for cultivating compassionate awareness the importance of unarming our heart as a pathway to Radical Acceptance, the deep connection between courage and an awake heart the true connection that arises when we fully arrive in the moment.
