From the iconic trio’s Outlandos D’Amour to Synchronicity, Summers changed the game for modern guitar playing with his groundbreaking use of modulation—shoutout chorus and flange!—and arpeggiated suspended chords, ultimately defining the sound of the 1980s. Post-Police, Summers’ jazz-focused instrumental work has proven deeply influential and wide ranging.
