Today we are joined by guest Joey Neely. Joey is originally from Atlanta, Georgia and is currently the Mate on a 1968 Burger M/Y. They spend winter in The Bahamas and Summer in New England.
Two years ago, Joey ran into an old friend who invited him as a guest on his classic yacht. Joey spent some time chatting with the Mate on board that went into depth about what being a yacht crew member was. Joey studied Business and Marketing and is very keen on event planning and theme parties. After spending 15 years working as a bartender and server in the Hospitality industry, Joey decided to take his hospitality to the sea. He moved into a crew house in Fort Lauderdale, attended Bluewater for his certification courses and started working as a Stew/Deck. Joey enjoys working on the interior, as service, event planning, and entertaining are his strengths.
Joey touches on the reality, that there are not many openly gay crew members, and how homophobia and prejudice still play a big part of the industry. Yachting has a very long way to go in terms of discrimination and becoming more accepting of people from all walks of life, sexualities, races, and religious groups.
