Julie Shea is a four time USA World Cross Country Team member, eight-time Collegiate National Champion and 1980 CWSA Cup (then Broderick, now Honda) Winner who shares her love of running and desire to give back to the sport.
She credits her family and father’s interest in being active as the basis of her running. From leisurely running to being timed, she had a meteoric rise as a 17 year old making two USA teams all the while setting a high school record that has not been broken for 30 years. Once a North Carolinan, always a North Carolinan, Julie describes how being a runner offers an appreciation for the outdoors and nature. She recalls her excitement in having new-found interest shown in girls and women’s participation in the first decade of TITLE IX, whether it an apparel company, educators or community that supported her running in cross country, on the track in college, or eventually running for office later in life. Julie shares what recognition means to a local runner who makes it to the national stage. She credits not only her family and community but her college coach who gave her great advice and she is aware that his scientific background was ahead of his time in training methods. Julie shares the lessons learned as she enters local politics and spends time giving back to her community. Her commitment to running continued when she founded Cool Kids Run, which involves parental engagement while making a statement beyond sport. Julie is now enjoying her retirement in the Hickory Nut Gorge area of North Carolina.
