Caitlin Stout is a student at Vanderbilt Divinity School — at least for the next few weeks. She will soon be graduating with her Masters in Divinity with a concentration in Chaplaincy. She’s been on the nigh endless journey of figuring out what ministry looks like as a queer person in Tennessee. We often place the burden of assimilation on the victim of queer phobia instead of holding the religious institutions and individuals responsible for progress. We talk about using religious belief as an excuse for objectively bad opinions, the difficulty of owning your identity, and how queer folk have to find their own shared history through community.
