In the last section of the 12th chapter of The Gospel According to John we find two summaries: one of the various responses to Jesus Christ and the second, a summary of the teachings of Jesus. John’s purpose in writing has been explicitly stated and the bold and astonishing claims of Jesus have been illustrated and affirmed in the miraculous signs Jesus performed. Why did some people still not believe? Why were some fearful or timid about believing in Jesus? And what can we learn about belief and following Christ in our own day and time, so riddled with doubt and skepticism?
