Arapawa Goat Chat with Callene Rapp

Cindra Kerscher and Brittany Sweeney are back with another Goat Chat. This week, special guest Callene Rapp is chatting about the critically endangered Arapawa goat.

Callene is a Senior Zookeeper at Sedgwick County Zoo (https://www.scz.org/), where they keep Arapawa goats. Callene also serves as the Registrar of the Arapawa Goat Breeders Association (https://www.arapawagoatsusa.org/).

In her spare time, Callene and her husband Eric are the owner-operators of The Rare Hare Barn, LLC, the largest heritage-breed meat-rabbit enterprise in the U.S. (www.rareharebarn.com). They also have more than 50 years of combined experience handling nearly every species of domestic livestock, and currently raise Pineywoods cattle and Arapawa goats. Both Eric and Callene have served on the Board of Directors for the Livestock Conservancy, and Callene served as Board Chair.

Callene has written numerous articles about livestock husbandry for Grit magazine, and in 2018 the couple wrote “Raising Rabbits for Meat” and “Homestead Cattle, the Guide to Raising Happy, Healthy Cows” published in 2021.
