We just couldn't talk about Pier Paolo Pasolini's "Trilogy of Life" without devoting an episode to his final film, his masterpiece, his first in a proposed "Trilogy of Death"... Salò, or the 120 Days of Sodom. One of the most infamous and controversial films of all time, Salò is a brutal and uncompromising work that, due to his murder mere weeks before its release, serves as Pasolini's final artistic statement. Alex and Ben also discuss Abel Ferrara's 2014 film Pasolini and, very briefly, Ari's latest Asterpiece Beau is Afraid.
An episode like this absolutely demands a guest so we've brought on Salò expert Irene Theo! This was Irene's 7th(!) viewing of the film, and she brings plenty of insight to the discussion, including some notes from Elaine Scarry's The Body in Pain: The Making and Unmaking of the World.
Despite the heavy subject matter this is a very fun episode. There's even some brief Howard Stern-esque nudity! Listeners, I hope you're impressed by our ability to oscillate wildly between the deadly serious and the deeply goofy. Perhaps this was in response to the traumatic film? Who's to say. This one's a real doozy!
