Trust and Obey: The Path to Receiving His Daily Manna – Exodus 16:1-36

The narrative of this text reminds us that, through testing, we should never forget God’s faithfulness in our past, that circumstances should not determine our attitude amid trials, that God’s enduring and steadfast love demonstrated time-after-time should do so. It reminds us that The LORD beckons His people to trust and to demonstrate our trust by pursuing a life of obedience to His instruction, and that obedience, which can only be accomplished through the Spirit’s power, will be rewarded in the end. This text teaches us the importance of patience as we wait upon the LORD; and it shows us that God’s love is often demonstrated as He gives us what we need while not always what we want. The Israelite’s reluctance to understand God’s purpose for the Sabbath as a gift implicitly includes within it a warning to us: We must be watchful so that what was intended to be a blessing may not become an obstacle in our lives. And lastly, the text drives us to a crucially important point: “Remembering God’s deeds” should lead us to place efforts towards setting up constant reminders in our lives, for our families, and for the generations to come. These constant reminders will recall God’s faithful hand working for our good throughout the trajectory of our lives.
