Death introduces weariness into God’s creation. We groan because of it. Even for Christians, for whom death has lost ultimate sting; death can be crippling, paralyzing, and deafening. Into our weariness steps a cause for rejoicing. That’s what Zechariah’s prophecy in Luke 2 establishes. The eternal Sunrise visited us from on high. God has raised up a powerful horn of salvation for us. He’s a light to those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death.
