Are You ‘Blessed but Sexually Repressed’? Get Rid of Your Sexual Hangups with These Tips

1706394

The female who expresses characteristics of the ‘Blessed but Repressed’ personality may have heard that God created us to enjoy pleasure, that pleasure is, in fact, our birthright, and even that the religious ideals promoted thousands of years ago to control society are no longer relevant. But moral and religious beliefs about sex and pleasure are hard to challenge.

Accepting and affirming your right to pleasure must come before sex. “If you don’t have the permission for pleasure, you won’t give yourself permission to enjoy sex,” says sex and relationship therapist, Esther Perel.

Of all the mental hangups that inhibit sexual release and orgasmic pleasure, religion is the hardest to argue against. After all, if someone believes that a higher power is judging their actions to determine whether or not they should be blessed with life everlasting in a heavenly realm, arguing won’t get you very far in convincing them to embrace their sexuality in the here and now. If you believe that god, the highest authority, doesn’t want you to enjoy your body, then you are not likely to give yourself permission to lie back, let go and get off.

Consider that most of the pervasive religious rules about sex featured in mainstream traditions of Christianity, Islam, and Judaism include things such as: no sex during menstruation, no birth control, no abortion, no same-gender sex, no anal sex, no oral sex, no sexual fantasy, no infidelity, no sex before marriage, no marriage outside the religion, and no sex outside marriage.

These are rules that were created 1000 to 2000 years ago where life was very different from today! Marty asks, “why do we limit our sexual expression based on the beliefs, superstitions, and fear of people who molded and shaped “religion” to control society?” What is your response?

Is God Really Against Sexual Pleasure?

Medically speaking, despite my research, I cannot answer this one definitively. The alternative to assuming that god is against pleasure is to embrace that you are naturally wired to crave, enjoy and seek out sexual expression. It seems more natural to thrive by seeking fulfillment and not wither with self-imposed restrictions. At least considering this as a possibility can open you up to discover your own path.

Sex Is Spiritual

Would it hurt to consider, as ancient sacred sex traditions do, that the union between two people can offer a mingling of souls, not just an intertwined heap of body parts?

What if sex and sensual pleasure are gifts from the gods, built into our nature to provide healthy fun, intimate connection and lifelong bonding to our beloved?

What if sexuality was part of the spiritual path of evolution and growth?

Opening up to the possibility of sacred sex offers us an opportunity to enjoy our bodies, explore passion and desire, share ourselves with a deep soul connection, all while developing spiritually.

Having traveled the world and studied cultural differences in sexuality I have a greater understanding of the many ways that the religious culture in America has warped our minds and created hateful, spiteful behaviors. Along the way, I have been inspired to discover a variety of world religious and spiritual traditions that view sex—even sex outside of or before marriage—as a beautiful, soulful and even divine experience. The ecstasy experienced at orgasm has been likened to a transcendental experience offering a taste of divine consciousness. The delights of giving and receiving oral-genital pleasure are even described in the most lovely way.

What I’ve heard from female clients over the years is how their religious beliefs caused them to get married to the wrong men, at the wrong time and for the wrong reasons. Spewing words from the Bible, preachers made them feel that a sexual impulse was considered dirty or wrong without marriage, so they took a stroll down the aisle and regretted that decision later. The inner conflict, guilt and shame have forced many women to deny the pleasure that nature built into our nervous system. Living with less than ideal relationships and putting up with passionless, sexless lives, led many of my clients to depression and despair.

Still others have chosen to rebel against their religious upbringing and go against the grain by indulging in and accepting an extreme sexual lifestyle, but not necessarily for the pleasure. Instead, a trade-off has been made to embrace sexuality, live with a silent self-proclaimed “dirty” label and denounce any spiritual connection.

I think there is another way to live a healthy, sexy life while remaining connected to your spiritual truth. But it must become precisely that, your spiritual truth. Make a commitment to discover and live your truth, starting today.
