In part one of a two part investigation, we outline the historical context of the modern refugee crisis with Professor Peter Gatrell, a migration history expert from the University of Manchester in England. Professor Gatrell explains how refugees came about as a byproduct of the nation-state system and how major conflicts like the World Wars, the Russian Revolution, and decolonization impacted them.
