I seem to be on a roll when it comes to making admissions into the depths of my soul, so I figured I’d just keep it going today!

So, I’ll admit, that if we had the money and the space (and it wouldn’t cost me my wife…), I would build a bomb shelter and fill it with food and water.

Okay, so now you know. I’m glad that’s out there. Hello, my name is David and I’m a wannabe prepper.

Have you heard of the show? It’s on the Discover channel, it’s called Doomsday Preppers. The show visits those who have deemed themselves to be preppers, evaluates just how prepped they are and gives them a score. I haven’t watched every episode, but so far, I’ve only seen someone score a 78/100. And these are the people who have built castles, underground bunkers and fruit houses. They have shelves and shelves of food and water, guns and ammo, bug out bags and MRE’s. If they only get a C+ for their effort, then I’m afraid to say, we’d be laughed off the show.

Asteroids, EMP’s, Earthquakes, Super Volcanoes, Tsunami’s, Food Supply Disruption, Economic Meltdown…you name it, these people are prepared for it.

We may not need to go to such extremes, but being prepared isn’t a bad idea. Where we live, we’re only about 60 miles from an active volcano and have had earthquakes not too long ago. The government only recommends having 72 hours of storage available. (http://www.ready.gov/build-a-kit) Personally, I’d like to have a couple of weeks. We’ve got a propane grill with a side burner. We’ve got some frozen water (quick tip: if you have a deep freeze, fill some milk jugs, pop bottles and juice bottles with water. It keeps your freezer from running as often and you have some backup water), we have enough food to get by and a sewer manhole in our backyard – so if worse comes to worse, I can just build an outhouse over that. (I’m sure that’s more than you wanted to know.)

Oh wait a second, this is a devotional…

“Wisdom is developed daily, not in a day.” Not sure where that came from, but the pursuit of wisdom is something we need to do every day. The reason is, when disasters come our way, we need to have the wisdom to know how to handle them. If we spend our lives seeking wisdom – studying the ways of the wise and trying to walk in them – when problems come our way we will have a way to handle them. We will be prepped.

Proverbs 3:21-26

21 My child, do not let them escape from your sight; (wisdom and understanding)
safeguard sound wisdom and discretion.
22 So they will give life to you,
and grace to adorn your neck.
23 Then you will walk on your way with security,
and you will not stumble.
24 When you lie down you will not be filled with fear;
when you lie down your sleep will be pleasant.
25 You will not be afraid of sudden disaster,
or when destruction overtakes the wicked;
26 for the Lord will be the source of your confidence,
and he will guard your foot from being caught in a trap.

That’s the thing about being prepped, we have less to fear. And when we’re prepped with wisdom from the Lord, we won’t have to be afraid of sudden disaster, or when destruction overtakes the wicked. We have built up our reserves of wisdom, we have built our lives around it’s principles and put them into practice. When the Lord is the source of our confidence, He is the one guarding us.

Even better than the temporary security we can feel from having prepped for a natural disaster of some kind, is the preparation we have done for the kinds of real disasters we will face in this life. Go ahead and prepare for an Alien invasion. Just make sure that you’re also preparing to face the enemy that already walks among us.
