The city's name, derived from "Sant'Iago," or Saint James in Galician, reflects its foundational myth tied to the apostle Saint James. According to Christian tradition, Saint James's disciples transported his remains to Galicia, where they were discovered in the early 9th century. King Alfonso II recognized the significance of this discovery and ordered the construction of a church, which eventually evolved into the grand Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela.
