Hilary talks with Karen Schierhorn (BIG EAR Pedals) about the tyranny of middle school band teachers, being physically blocked in conversation, the dynamics of working with your partner, and octave pedals for vocal cords. Plus, meritocracy.

KAREN’S BIO

I was born in South Korea and was adopted at seven months. I lived in Kent, Ohio until I went to New York City for fashion design at Parsons School of Design. I then started working in the fashion industry, started in bridal… met the brides… then moved to sweaters, then worked for Andy and Tommy Hilfiger’s Rock and Roll-inspired clothing line, Andrew Charles where I met Grant.

A few years after meeting, Grant and I started BIG EAR n.y.c. in the Lower East Side. We realized we didn’t have enough space in a studio apartment so we moved to Greenpoint, Brooklyn into a two-bedroom apartment. That’s where BIG EAR n.y.c. really started expanding. I was still working fulltime in outerwear for Tumi, coming home and working with Grant on BIG EAR at night. It was mildly exhausting! Eventually, we ran out of room and decided to move to Nashville, TN, where we could have more space and both focus on the business. We also dropped the n.y.c. from our name and changed it to BIG EAR pedals at this time.

When we moved to Nashville, we discovered this small oasis of guitar pedal makers! Until recently, Matt from 1981 Inventions lived here, Zach from Mythos Pedals, Bryan Laurenson from Quiet Theory, AWOL Pedals, Jesse from RudeTech, Trey from Retroactive Pedals… even Paul Cochrane lives about 20 minutes away. And I’m probably forgetting someone… There are a lot of us here! Haha It’s awesome because we can share and exchange parts and it’s just fun to hang with people who do the same thing as you do. At any rate, we had moved to Nashville for more space, but I still feel like we have pedals all over the place. We work from our home and basically have guitar pedals on every surface. It’s the same!

We recently released our newest pedal, ALBIE, an ambient modulator, which we named after our cat, Cat Albert, who recently passed. I think it’s the most meaningful product I have ever worked on... but we’re on major backorder right now, so lots of ALBIEs are gradually taking over our house! The way I see it, every day is a new opportunity, and I’m excited to see where it goes.

MENTIONS

Andy Hilfiger / Steven Tyler / SXSW / Dr. Scientist / East Side Music Supply / Mass Street Music
