Leila Zerrougui - Stabilising the Democratic Republic of the Congo

In her address to the IIEA, Special Representative Zerrougui shares her insights on the current situation in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. She highlights the work of MONUSCO over the past decade and the Mission’s efforts to balance conflict prevention with the consolidation of state authority and governance. Ms Zerrougui also looks ahead to remaining challenges and to the long-term prospects for peace and stability in the DRC. As part of the IIEA's Development Matters lecture series, this event was supported by Irish Aid. About the Speaker: Ms Zerrougui was appointed Special Representative of the UN Secretary General and Head of the UN Stabilisation Mission in the DRC (MONUSCO) in February 2018. Her previous roles included Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Children in Armed Conflict and Deputy Special Representative of the Secretary-General in MONUSCO. Ms Zerrougui is a legal expert in human rights and the administration of justice and has over 30 years’ experience in rule of law and the protection of civilians. She has served as a member of the Working Group on Arbitrary Detention under the United Nations Human Rights Council and as a member of the Supreme Court of Algeria.
