Episode 44: Revisiting Episode 1 with Parrys Raines
Manage episode 271085291 series 1947688
Recently we’ve been ruminating on the topic of board appointments – namely, Bridget Louden’s appointment to the Telstra board at the age of 32. Given that the average age of board directors around the world – especially corporate boards – is early sixties, this appointment is encouragingly ground-breaking.
It made us reflect on age in the boardroom, and with that we were prompted to remember the first EVER Future Directors podcast episode, featuring Alumni member Parrys Raines. We spoke to Parrys who, at the young age of 21, had joined two formal boards before she'd even graduated university. She had some amazing things to say about being a young board director during this episode, and it’s well worth a revisit.
Paul and Parrys discuss:
- The one thing people need in order to overcome any obstacles they face
- Some sage advice from Parrys regarding those who haven’t yet discovered their purpose and passion in life
- What changes should we be seeing in the boardroom? How can younger people help with such changes?
- Why an intergenerational mentorship can be so beneficial – especially for an older mentee
- Career paths for millennials, and the spectrum of opportunity they have
- Changes in the status quo regarding how we view the career path, and why these changes are positive
- Why we need to understand and accept that we can learn something from everyone – even those who are younger than ourselves
