O novo episódio do Estudos Medievais recebe a pesquisadora Sara Oderdenge, da pós-graduação em História da Universidade de São Paulo. O tema deste episódio são as pedras rúnicas, monumentos memoriais erigidos pelas sociedades escandinavas entre os séculos VIII e XIII. Os patrocinadores desses monumentos buscavam homenagear e associar-se à memória de familiares ou de aliados falecidos. Sara Oderdenge explica as características e funções das pedras rúnicas e também discute o surgimento e os usos dos alfabetos rúnicos (Futhark), e como é feito o trabalho de decifração e interpretação das inscrições. As runas aparecem em diversos tipos de objetos e com mensagens variadas, e são evidências do grau de letramento das populações escandinavas ao longo da era viking e do período medieval.
