But when they are hired to free a family of witches who have been locked in their mansion by magic, they find themselves on strange ground. After all, helping witches never was in the job description. But these witches are in trouble, and that puts Max and the gang in a dangerous position. Things only get worse when it comes to light that there are evil powers and ancient curses at play. Especially because Max is certain his clients are hiding important information about the case. Of course, they are. They're witches. Members Reviews: Another 'must-read' from Stuart Jaffe I've read all of the Max Porter books and this one is my second favorite. The story unfolds fast enough to keep your interest but not so fast that it's a blur. In this installment, Max finds that voicing his doubts gets him to dig deeper into his reasons for wanting to quit. Drummond opens up and gives a look at a horrible episode that still weighs heavily on him and just may have the answers to Max's current case. I enjoy Max and Sandra's scenes because they feel real in the way they love, argue and interact. They know one another so well and it shows. Max enlists the help of his mother and the Sandwich boys and it's fun to 'watch' that part. His relationship with the boys is growing with each book in the series and it's nice to see. The North Carolina setting is fun for me, I've lived here for 10 years and learn a lot about my state when reading this series. The pacing was perfect to keep me turning pages late into the night. I love the dialogue and how the main players banter with one another. Hiding the ghost of Drummond from Max's mom isn't easy but it can be funny. The story held tight in the telling and just when I thought I knew where it was going Mr Jaffe proved me wrong. His imagination is just that much better than mine and always keeps me guessing. Well written as usual, fully entertaining, light-hearted at times and dark and broody at others, this is a great story that helps Max evolve a little more. Another great addition to the series Max, Drummond, and the gang are once more in the thick of "witchy" things. Max just wants to forget the occult stuff and take regular cases, but his wife and Drummond convince him otherwise. It seems that a curse has been put on an old plantation house that is keeping the family from leaving it. As Max and Sandra dig deeper they find that things are not what they seem, they are much, much worse. I liked this story. Max has become a little more cautious of things that go bump in the night. He comes to the realization that someone has to do it. Since he is already cursed he is never going to get away from it any way. Max and Drummond still worry about Sandra learning witchcraft, even though it does come in handy. I can't wait to see what comes their way next. I haven't read all the books in the series, but it is helpful to have read at least the first one to get to know Max, Sandra, and Drummond. Another out of the park hit for Max Porter and his gang of Scoobies battling the bad, the bold, and the paranormal This is the best series.
