“You had the power all along, my dear.” -Glinda the Good Witch, The Wizard of Oz.

Women cannot choose if they are not given the same options to make their choices from. If their choices are not free of biases: burdens of keeping everyone around them happy, the responsibility of keeping the family together, the duty towards nurturing kids before themselves, the penalty they pay for being ambitious, or self-advocating.
Yes, we can give women the freedom of choices, but these choices come to them through a funnel of these societal and cultural conditions. The complacency of women is often not derived from free choice because their decisions to choose lower-paying jobs maybe not because they are not qualified but because they need the flexibility to prioritize their families over their careers. Women shoulder more familial burdens than men because society expects them to do so disproportionately. Women are programmed to sacrifice careers in the face of familial obligations. As a society, we have programmed ourselves to deliberately keep women out of the most influential spheres of society. When Anokhi asked Shaurya that she wanted to have the freedom of choice to take her own decisions in life, she meant that her decisions would never be encumbered by other people’s choices. But what about the stipulations that society has already placed on women in terms of expectations?
Is it enough that only the expectations change only for women? Hear Sumi, Supriya, and Shreya from the Shaurya and Anokhi fandom speak about how the show's content inspired them to advocate the debate about love and career as mutually exclusive choices as presented to young women. Hear this very inspiring panel discussion and tell us what you think.
We would love to hear your thoughts.
