The adventurers arrive at the Golden Academy in hopes of stocking up on some powerful spellbooks. Knowing they are less than welcome, the group attempts to disguise Ariana. Although they make it to the library unscathed, Ariana's disguise quickly unravels when she meets an old friend, Padem. Kos and Brilla meet a new and elf 'friend', who has a distressing fascination with tieflings.

Meanwhile, Ariana and Padem are confronted by a University Official who orders Ariana to speak to the higher ups. After trying unsuccessfully to flee, the group meet by Headmaster Krivi, who confronts the crew about Ariana’s debt and admits to assisting a fleeing Cade. Krivi agrees to let the party leave with their books in exchange for the Arsen’s Bucket of Rubies TM and the promise of other items of value that belonged to Cade and might still be inside the castle walls.

Dragging themselves out of the chaos from their royal assassination, Verity, Elly and Ariana are in mourning. Reclaiming her title, Princess Verity faces her need to repent for the murders in her past. Elly leaves behind the man she loves to find what remains of her people, long thinking them dead. Ariana struggles with what it means to be both Penny and Anisha, as her mind merges with that of a villager she was unable to save.

They are joined by new allies, Lenore, Taabi and Brilia. Lenore, a follower of the Raven Queen, finds herself drawn to helping these lost young women, but holds secrets that may change the meaning of magic. Taabi, a nomad who will do anything to survive, also seeks the secrets of the dead. Brilia, a former housewife turned adventurer who learned her warlock abilities to protect her partner, Kos.
