TRANSCRIPT:
Hello everyone, my name is Jasmine, and you are listening to the English ClAIRSTONE Podcast, where you can build the cornerstone of your English vocabulary! For all our new listeners, welcome to the community, and for our regulars, hello again! Before we start, I will remind you that we upload new episodes twice a week and there are transcripts for each podcast episode in Arabic, English, and Spanish at our website projectclair.org, so go check that out if you want to follow along!

We will be discussing health-related vocabulary words with the nonprofit organization CCAP Across The Map, which focuses on women’s health, for the first two episodes of every month. Today, we will look at the words “self-exam” and “mammogram.”

Self-Exam

The phrase “self-exam”, with “self” spelled S-E-L-F, and “exam” spelled E-X-A-M, is a verb that describes an examination, or a closer look, of the body for signs of disease. A breast self-exam refers to checking a woman’s breast to see if there are any changes in the way the breasts look or feel. A breast self-exam should be done once per month starting at age 20. If a woman notices any changes, she should go to her doctor for more testing. An example sentence is, “Mary checks her breast during the first week of every month for a self-exam to see if there are any changes.”
Mammogram

The word “mammogram,” spelled M-A-M-M-O-G-R-A-M, is a noun that refers to a picture of a breast taken with an X-ray machine, which is a special machine to look at body parts inside a person. A mammogram is used as a medical test to diagnose breast cancer. It is best that women get a mammogram once per year starting when they are 45 and then once every 2 years starting when they are 55. An example sentence is, “During a mammogram, you take a picture of the breast using an X-ray machine to screen for breast cancer.”
