Welcome to Clairstone! In this episode, you will learn how to use the English words "gratitude and hope".
TRANSCRIPT:
Hello everyone, my name is Shivika, and you are listening to the English ClAIRSTONE Podcast, where you can build the cornerstone of your English vocabulary! For all the new listeners, welcome to the community, and for our regulars, hello again! Before we start, I will remind you that we upload new episodes twice a week and there are transcripts for each podcast episode in English, Arabic, and Spanish at our website projectclair.org, so go check that out if you want to follow along!

Today we will be looking at the words gratitude and hope.

The first word gratitude is spelled as G-R-A-T-I-T-U-D-E. Gratitude means being thankful for something or showing appreciation for something. Gratitude is a way saying thanks for something. For example a person may have gratitude for all the presents they got over the holidays. This means that they are thankful for the gifts they receive and they appreciate them. In a sentence, you can use gratitude as, “She expressed her gratitude for the support she received on Instagram by millions.” In this sentence she is just thankful for and appreciates the support she receives. A synonym can be recognition.

The second and last word, hope is spelled as H-O-P-E. Hope can be used as a noun and as a verb though when it is used as a verb it can change its form depending on the tense it is used in. One of the noun definitions for hope is a feeling of expectation or desire for something happens. It is the feeling one gets when they want something to happen. In a sentence hope can be used as, “Elena studied in hope of acing her exams this year.” Hope is the feeling she gets because she desires acing her exams.

Hope can also mean the only person or thing that can help or save someone. So if someone is ill, their only hope is surgery. This means that surgery can be the only thing that saves them from dying. In a sentence it can be, “Sarah was Micah’s only hope to help with her studies.”

One of the definitions for a verb form of hope is wanting to achieve something. For example, “Michael hopes to secure a spot on the varsity team. In this sentence, Hope describes Michael’s want for the varsity spot.

Intending to do something if it is possible is also a definition of the verb form of hope. Sage is hoping to address global issues in the committee. Sage’s intention is to follow through on a certain action and that is what the word hope is describing.
