Love God, love people, and change the world. We believe the life and lessons of Jesus aren’t just good advice, but are Good News for us here and now. As a church, we are all about following Jesus and know there’s no end to that journey—we’re more about becoming than arriving. On today’s Bible Answer Man broadcast (10/19/21), Hank continues teaching through the Gospel of Matthew. Picking back up in chapter 12, Hank reads from verse 43 where Jesus speaks of an evil spirit coming out of a man and seeking rest but cannot find it and returns to find the man unoccupied and returns with spirits even more wicked than itself. Jesus concludes, “And the final condition of that person is worse than the first. That is how it will be with this wicked generation” (Matthew 12:45 NIV). Jesus here is speaking to a particular generation. We know this because he emphatically says just that. Moreover, Jesus makes clear that this illustration of demon possession exemplifies how it will be with “this wicked generation.” Not the one previous to it. Nor that one following it. But this generation. Chapter 12 concludes with Jesus being told that his mother and brothers were waiting outside wishing to speak to him. “He replied to him, ’Who is my mother, and who are my brothers?’ Pointing to his disciples, he said, “Here are my mother and my brothers. For whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother’” (Matthew 12:48-50). Jesus here in effect reveals our adoption as sons and daughters—not a matter of genealogy, nor of natural birth, but rather a reflection of God’s eternal purposes from the creation of the first man onward. Through adoption, God’s children become what they were designed to be—gods by grace. His divinity interpenetrating our humanity. His love, His strength, His glory, His righteousness.
