When he met Van Hauser, a comedy writer for radio, he saw his ticket out of the cab. Even though they instantly disliked one another, Gus convinced Van to offer him a chance as a writer. Ironically, on their own they were both terrible writers. As a team, however, they were a smash hit. When his Van announced he was getting married to Julie, Gus figured his partner would break up the team. The solution was simple: He had to get rid of Julie.
