Scripture
James 1:5-7 ESV
5 If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him. 6 But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea that is driven and tossed by the wind. 7 For that person must not suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord;
You’ve got to ask.

Without Reproach
God is not looking to find fault with you. You are righteous in Christ.
Know you are in good standing with the Father
1 John 1:9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
Ask in faith.
You can only ask in faith if you know what you are asking for is his will.
Romans 10:17
So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.
1 John 5:14-15 ESV
14 And this is the confidence that we have toward him, that if we ask anything according to his will he hears us. 15 And if we know that he hears us in whatever we ask, we know that we have the requests that we have asked of him.
Do Doubting
Doubting comes when you take in consideration other things besides the Word of God. The Word received always produces faith. When only the Word is considered, faith continues. When other things are considered, doubt enters in.
One who doubts shouldn’t expect to receive.
The one who remains in faith should expect to receive what they have asked for.
