Carmel Leahy moved to the remote Kimberley community of Yakanarra in 1990 to establish a school in a dry community breaking away from Fitzroy Crossing. She taught there for thirteen years before becoming a linguist, consultant and activist across North-Western Aboriginal communities. Currently she is fighting to save the Fitzroy River from cotton farming interests
