The 2021 Netflix documentary “Untold: Malice in the Palace” unpacks some overlooked elements of a riot that broke out during an Indiana Pacers/Detroit Pistons in November 2004. The careers of Pacers’ Jermaine O’Neal, Reggie Miller, Stephen Jackson, and Ron Artest (Metta World Peace) were all impacted in the aftermath. All but Miller received suspensions…and he chose to retire at the end of the season (his 18th}. Many involved in the melee also faced criminal charges. All of this coming after the small-market Pacers were widely believed to be on track for an NBA title. NBA rules also changed in the aftermath. Many people think they changed for the worse. How did it really start? Was there a rush to judgment against the players? Were players or fans more at fault? What role did racism…and the intersection of hip-hop culture and NBA culture…play in the reaction to and punishment for the events that night? Did the off-court legal troubles of other NBA players in the couple of years preceding this event affect the public’s opinion of these players…and the NBA in general? We kick off the episode with a couple of topics that Mike’s been discussing on his stream this week: no fap…and Wim Hoff breathing. Dean Saddoris of Caffeine and Kilos joins us in our review and reaction to this film. You can find Dean on Instagram @deansaddoris.ck, and at caffeineandkilos.com.
