On this episode of Advances in Care , host Erin Welsh and Dr. Craig Smith, Chair of the Department of Surgery and Surgeon-in-Chief at NewYork-Presbyterian and Columbia discuss the highlights of Dr. Smith’s 40+ year career as a cardiac surgeon and how the culture of Columbia has been a catalyst for innovation in cardiac care. Dr. Smith describes the excitement of helping to pioneer the institution’s heart transplant program in the 1980s, when it was just one of only three hospitals in the country practicing heart transplantation. Dr. Smith also explains how a unique collaboration with Columbia’s cardiology team led to the first of several groundbreaking trials, called PARTNER (Placement of AoRTic TraNscatheteR Valve), which paved the way for a monumental treatment for aortic stenosis — the most common heart valve disease that is lethal if left untreated. During the trial, Dr. Smith worked closely with Dr. Martin B. Leon, Professor of Medicine at Columbia University Irving Medical Center and Chief Innovation Officer and the Director of the Cardiovascular Data Science Center for the Division of Cardiology. Their findings elevated TAVR, or transcatheter aortic valve replacement, to eventually become the gold-standard for aortic stenosis patients at all levels of illness severity and surgical risk. Today, an experienced team of specialists at Columbia treat TAVR patients with a combination of advancements including advanced replacement valve materials, three-dimensional and ECG imaging, and a personalized approach to cardiac care. Finally, Dr. Smith shares his thoughts on new frontiers of cardiac surgery, like the challenge of repairing the mitral and tricuspid valves, and the promising application of robotic surgery for complex, high-risk operations. He reflects on life after he retires from operating, and shares his observations of how NewYork-Presbyterian and Columbia have evolved in the decades since he began his residency. ×In this section of the Lord's Prayer, we ask for God's grace and power to live in the freedom of the Kingdom of God.
Often we find it difficult to forgive genuinely and completely because we practice a form of forgiveness that is neither biblical nor healing.
This is as basic as it gets, asking God to provide food. Remember, Jesus’ audience is filled with poor people, struggling to get by during the Roman occupation. And here, he invites them to join their ancestors (Exodus 16:4-5) in the wilderness, trusting God for provision each and every day.
An interactive vision Sunday exploring what it means when God comes to be with humans.
This is a prayer for the reunion of Heaven and Earth, and we’re invited to participate. This is the battle cry of the believer
When we pray as Jesus taught His disciples to pray it shapes us, it touches our heart, it creates appetite and yearning for the very things that God desires.
JESUS is a GOOD KING. - Who went around doing good, his by rule/reign HEALING. RESTORING. SETTING PEOPLE FREE. & BUILDING PEOPLE UP. Taking the world back from the wrong hands.
Anna had been there in the Temple for sixty years, another ordinary day, praying, worshipping, fasting, then one day she sees him. You never know when it’s the day.
Paul's closing preach. A whole region has been touched. Paul is keen that the momentum he started would keep going. What does he say? If you want to keep all of this going keep watch over yourselves, the mission and one another.
The Holy Spirit’s passion is to see the good news about Jesus sweep across the nations. He desires to see people introduced to the life-changing love of God. Life in all its fullness. To form communities full of Him. Empowering believers to become locations of Heaven on Earth.
]One of the hallmarks of the early church was its incredible diversity. Cultural, social, and ethnic barriers were torn down, as the Holy Spirit united people from hugely different backgrounds. The Spirit welcomes everyone into a family. A family where everyone is equal, an undivided community. The Spirit knits together people into one family.…
How does the Holy Spirit help us in a storm? When there is a gap between what we are hoping for and what we see. Or when we see the gulf between our experience and the accounts in the book of ACTS. How can we avoid becoming negative, cynical, and even blaming ourselves “I don’t have enough faith”
You are going to help people find life in all its fullness. You are going to change the world. This is HOW. Don’t try and do this alone. Holy Spirit will fill you with boldness — willingness to take risks and act innovatively, giving confidence or courage.
It is the holy spirit who COMES and empowered the Church to do the MISSION OF KING JESUS
BELONGING is part of the good news package; you were born again to be part of God’s family. Reconnection to God + others. Devotion to GOD and devotion to people.
The nearness of God himself is the only all satisfying experience of the universe).
The nearness of God Himself is the only ALL satisfying experience of the universe.
Jesus says I am IN my FATHER and my FATHER is in ME… there is no separation- there is a perfect Union.
So Who is God? What’s He really like? That’s the most important question. How in the world can we even know the answer? Where can we look? Has God revealed the answer to the question somewhere? And if he has, Who are you, God?
The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.
Our response to God's unchanging perfection IS to worship Him. Worship is about attention an unwavering attitude towards him, a decision to worship no matter what…
God the rock refers to God’s unchanging perfections. "Rock" indicates firmness, stability, and faithfulness. Unmovable In His love, fairness, justice, and perfection.
God cannot be the cause of evil in our lives. The fountain of light, cannot be the cause of darkness…
In an ever-changing, constantly shifting world, we can count on the unchanging nature of God
This verse holds the key to overcome this natural emotion and have peace. The key is relational. When God speaks about not fearing not being dismayed/discouraged He personally reasons with us.
Everything we see was imagined and created by God,
“With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.”
When Jesus taught us to pray He started the prayer with Father. (Matthew 6:9) The name Father tells us something profound/DEEP about God and the relationship we are invited to have with him. The most intimate and unbreakable relationship possible with the God of the universe.
Jesus created all things - all things means Everything. No Exceptions. Paul doesn’t want us to miss how completely Extensive/vast this is. There is Heaven/Earth, Visible/Invisible. Powers/rulers/authorities.
Back, back, back, as we look into endless ages, there NEVER was NOTHING. No matter how far back or how far forward you go He is there. There is no “before” God and no “after”
CCK is called to be an outpost of God’s Kingdom. Increasingly On Earth as it is Heaven. What does that mean? What does it look like/feel like? According to 1 Corinthians 13 The greatest expression of Heaven on Earth is AGAPA LOVE. Unconditional Love is the “more excellent way”
Jesus placed such an emphasis upon the work of the Holy Spirit that he says ‘wait’ ‘do not leave until’ Only embark on the Christian life of serving me once attention had been given to this issue.
Attitude of Perseverance. Love never takes failure as defeat, for it never for gives up
Love has a supernatural ability to keep going until the end, to never give up
It is the believers birthright to hear God's voice. Teaching, testimonies and activation.
This passage is about LOVE TEACHING US TO REACT DIFFERENTLY when someone has done us wrong and when we are face to face with the hurt.
Love does not insist on its own way. Unconditional love isn't self-absorbed seeing life predominantly through the lens of my own preferences, opinions, tastes and rights.
I wanted to write a letter to you this Easter as a way of thinking deeply about the Cross and the wonder and joy of your resurrection. Lord, let the reality of Your resurrection change my life today. Give me eyes to see You, ears to hear You, and a heart to believe You.
Being Envious is desiring something that someone else has…and being resentful about not having it. Envy is the opposite of contentment- it is focusing on what we don’t have
God protects and cares for us like a Mother Hen. He comforts us like a Mother. A longing love even those who have not wanted His love
The Bible is honest, full of reality and that’s comforting. If we give ourself to loving service expressed as patience and kindness it means our strong craving for a trouble-free life must be laid down.
God has an eternal supply of what we ache for. Must have a source of eternal love and acceptance. Daily - Need a convincing dose of the reality God loves us. Giving an unshakeable confidence in value, worth, I know I am loveable. A source independent of people’s reactions and validation, and our own performance.…
God wants to release a FRESH experience of His unconditional love so that we live totally RELAXED and at HOME. Enjoying A deep sense of calm/rest in the Fathers Arms. That our experience of being loved becomes so great that we simply love others in the same way.
Paul encourages us to embrace deep thought about what we believe and where those beliefs are taking us. (Don’t be deceived. It is NOT that God is vengeful looking to punish. It’s just the the moral and spiritual world operates according this reality
"Why would you ever try and justify yourself when you are my adopted son?"
What’s the story you tell yourself about your life, identity, capacity, and destiny? What’s the story you tell yourself about how God thinks about you? Is it a story rooted in the GOOD NEWS? One of the clearest statements of GOOD NEWS.
Jesus you are the LIGHT that shone. And I too was one of the people who sat waiting in the DARKNESS. I would never have been able to find my way or see reality without your light. The light of God dawned on me. A light that comes from outside of me and reveals the truth and reality of things.
If everything we do is boiled down and simplified to what one person thinks every decision, choice, conversation, priority becomes much plainer. 100% is Easier than 80%
Paul wants to say STOP - “You are deserting him who called you.” They are not just turning from a doctrine, or an idea but from God. If you turn to a different gospel, you turn away from God.
What is rest? How we can miss it? And how to get it?
Freedom presents us with choices/decisions responsibility. Our wills are deeply involved in walking, being rooted and having the foundation of our life built upon Christ.
What Stops us to liVE IN HIM, THROUGH HIM, FOR HIM?
Experiencing a love that surpasses knowledge— and being filled to the measure of all the fullness of God.
Are you amazed you are a Christian? - Some people say I would be amazed if I had a dramatic story. If I had been a real rebel and then came to Christ. Or if I had a story of an amazing power encounter. Or if I was experiencing more now. Ephesians 2:1-9 tells us that all our stories are equally crazy and dramatic. How about you were DEAD and now you are ALIVE.…
A step by step journey through Ephesians1, spending time to linger and enjoy Every Spiritual Blessing.
A totally NEW LIFE to be LIVED on RADICALLY NEW FOOTING.
The law is useless for the Christian, the role of the Law to reveal sin. The law can point stuff out but ineffective is for change, freedom and transformation.
Alive to God and Dead to See. Freed to live a new life in a new land
A personal reflection on Romans 5:1-2 - Peace with God - My only thoughts about God were about does He exists? No grid for thinking God was someone you could KNOW, have access to and enjoy relationship with. Never heard anything about that until I was 18.
17 New Testament chapters that will finally convince you that you are NOW completely right with God. Romans 4 - How do we get to be right with God? Paul answers the question of how to be right with God by using the example of Abraham.
Introduction to series - 17 New Testament chapters that will finally convince you that you are NOW completely right with God.
What do you believe God is most interested in speaking to you about?
Lectio Divina - Divine Reading. A devotional/prayerful reading of the Bible that has existed for over 1,700 years. An ancient invitation. It dates back to the early centuries of the Christian Church and was established as a monastic practice by Benedict in the 6th century. The practice understands Scripture as a meeting place for a personal encounter/living conversation with God…
How God gives himself as our inheritance, share and portion
The cross of Christ reaches far beyond personal salvation - His death and resurrection makes possible to reconciliation of ‘all things’; not just our souls but systems from broken hearts, homes, and bodies, to businesses, eco systems and ideologies
Beloved, there is to be no more surrendering your identity to a negative. I am going to make war on all your negativity. Whose side do you want to be on?
There is a place set aside for you, where you can make the enemy tired and weary.
The reason I say all these things to you, says the Lord, is I so want to bring a quickening spirit into the earth ...
We can do it - We start with our Mustard-Seed: We put our Faith in Him We have been given the AUTHORITY 3 pillars: Love, Faith, Obedience to step out
In a non-hierarchical Kingdom family, where there is an emphasis upon equality, powerful people who dream, princes and princesses. There is the still the gift of leadership.
Intimacy with the Father is a gift of the Spirit
The church exists for the mission of Jesus in the world
Just like Esther in the old Testament, out of her intimacy/relationship with the King- she was able to boldly approach the mighty king and make the big ask for her people without fear.
A celebration of The Holy Spirit who marks us out as a people who have found something phenomenal.
Dreams bring our LIFE ALIVE. invigorates, energises, ignites creativity, leads to innovation, opens up possibilities, exploration, expansiveness creates inner passion, generates optimism, builds community.
What are the implications of Jesus saying he has given us his glory?
As children of God, we are called to hear God’s voice and never grow out of it. We are called to nurture our dependance on Father and take pleasure in being in His presence.
Our unique gifting, calling and way of enjoying relationship with God
The enemy of Intimacy with God is the illusion of control. Living independent is an expression of mistrust and is at the root of fear. Fear dominates our heart when we are not positioned through our identity as a child to receive His grace.
It’s impossible to cultivate an intimate, close, relaxed, trusting, abiding relationship, with God if you are not convinced that He is GOOD and His Love and Goodness are constantly towards you.
DOING THE WORK OF JESUS AND THE GREATER WORK: HOW ON EARTH ARE WE SUPPOSED TO DO IT?
Mothers are Everywhere - a gift to ALL humanity Showing what God is Like.
The Culture of Heaven is NOTHING like what you think. “ Jesus says I turn everything you understand about FAIR on its head. "My generosity may offend you. My Grace may shock you"
What would happen if I took my mustard seed of faith-and just came to him. Admitting I was powerless, and simply asked for his help?
Why I love the church! How God took me from bored child to captivated son.
The tiny tin of mushy peas that broke my heart. How God took us from lack to abundance.
Testimony Series: Jamie Lee tells his story about how God believed in him more than he did himself, and how God taught him to say yes to his prophetic assessment.
Rachel Lee tells her story about learning that God's approval is enough! How she emerged in her calling despite tough circumstances and obstacles.
In the stories we will hear God Say to us what we would never say to our selves. To do for us what we could never do for ourselves. Launching us on adventures we would never volunteer for ourself.
What is most natural to Jesus. His core motivation. What’s at his very centre? What directs and drives ALL he does?
Freedom comes from the Spirit. - A freedom First to see. - A freedom to desire what we see. - A freedom from HIM that brings transformation from Glory to Glory.
Every prophetic calling, every destiny is written in inside of collective narrative: WE the people of God, The family of God, His children. And the goal is always communion, Unity with God and Others
Freedom, Faith, healing and discovering and using the resources of Heaven
The new covenant of the Spirit gives life-
When we face these moments where we don’t know what to ask for - God prays to God for us. The TRINITY interacts on our behalf. Father searches our Heart - Holy Spirit is there praying.
It is the role of the Holy Spirit to supernaturally touch people so they are convicted and persuaded by the message of the gospel.
The main context of 1 Cor 12-14 is when the body meets together, then the hand of God is manifest distributing gifts to us ALL
We can’t enjoy the be benefits of the kingdom is we won’t surrender and relinquish all other things that give us control.
The kingdom of God is so valuable that losing everything on earth, but getting the kingdom, is a happy trade-off.
Jesus doesn’t sow buildings, methods, programmes or structures rather he is continuously sowing his people into the field of the world. So that he has people everywhere to extend his rule and reign.
The good news is not just a gospel of salvation, the gospel is the good news of the kingdom of God coming to us!
Doing for Jesus flowing out of our being with Jesus.
Liam Pickford tells his story about why he loves witches.
After a prayer-meeting gathering in 1840, five people discuss a potent question. "If there is revival going on in the area, and God is already visiting his people with an outpouring of His Spirit, why shouldn't that also happen here in Abergwesyn?"
Tracey Cook tells her story of how she got out of debt and learnt to live God's financial best.
Kiptieu tells her story about favour and patience.
Testimony Series. A story about going after the supernatural and miraculous
Growing up under the cloud of addiction - how God led me to a better way
"Show me your face and let me hear your voice" Jo Aiken tells her story of God revealing his desires and how they have shaped her life.
Jesus placed such an emphasis upon the person/work of the Holy Spirit that he says ‘wait’ ‘do not leave until’ Only embark on the Christian life of serving me once you have received the gift.
Jesus SAID The spirit of Truth will guide you in all truth and teach you all things! WE NEED A RELATIONSHIP WITH GOD ALIVE IN US
How supernatural Fruit Grows in our life.
The seal of the spirit: we know we are God's children
HOLY SPIRIT AS OUR HELPER - I will not leave you alone.
The Holy Spirit is a person. The Holy Spirit is God. We are called to have a relationship with Holy Spirit and walk supernaturally by the Spirit, empowered to do impossible things.
To grasp, understand and comprehend, how amazing, revolutionary, significant, the church is PAUL writes that Each person is a living illustration. The Human body. Many parts, diverse functions, some hidden, some prominent, limbs, organs, cells. Diversity, without CONFORMITY functioning in perfect UNITY…
Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, ‘Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.’
Learning how to pray for one another based on Paul's heart for Timothy
Our number one calling is to ABIDE. Doing for Jesus flowing out of being with Jesus. God invites us to be consciously aware of him. To live with easy familiarity with God’s presence.
What if we experienced such a wave of God’s unconditional love that we had nothing left to hide? Living Seen. Living RELAXED and at HOME. With God - Ourself - Others
The Western idea of following Jesus is that he makes my INDIVIDUAL life better or more enjoyable. Like social media celebrity Christianity/church - Do a great work for God - Be Popular. Be Great. Be Successful. Jesus SHOCKS his disciples when halfway through his ministry he clearly/PLAINLY explains where all this is heading - the cross…
The goal is intimacy with God- a deep connection with Him so that we would know God’s heart but also the plan that he has prepared for us
Discovering your good work for Jesus and enjoying his power to fulfil it.
Whilst NOT the source of grief and pain God wants to ENLARGE us and TRANSFORM us through them. Contained in the moment is a an invitation to encounter God and His goodness.
Living in the grace of God was foundational to the Christian Life in the teaching of the Apostle. What is Grace and how do we live in it?
Walking in a full expression of our FREEDOM requires understanding the families we grew up in. The way we DID things/what we LEARNED/SAW/experienced become like unspoken RULE, VALUES, and WAYS of doing LIFE
The link between prayer, courage and boldness
Find Freedom Try StepsWhat do we do with our pain? Where do we turn when we experience pain/disappointment/stress? Where do we flee? What gives us temporary relief/numbing and distraction? At the root of a destructive thought pattern/behaviour is PAIN. THINGS/ THOUGHTS to distract/numb/comfort some pain or relieve the pressure we are experiencing.…
God is hope - the source of ALL HOPE How do we receive abounding Hope? How can be filled with ALL Joy and Peace?
We are both uniquely GIFTED. And uniquely LIMITED.
Loving God and Loving people linked and inseparable.
Jesus has made you his own - and nothing you can do is going to change his mind. His mind is settled and irreversible.
Jesus is rich in mercy and love forever
Jesus is a tender friend - It’s a two-way relationship: companionship, communion, mutual respect, joy, sharing lives and dreams like an actual real friend
The Hear of Jesus Series. The emotional Life of Jesus.
Human love is like a CANDLE Jesus’ love is like the SUN. We surrender, yield, Bow when we experience the loveliness, The Beauty of his love towards us.
How Jesus stands for us and and with us, how Jesus aligns himself with us and speaks on our behalf.
The main purpose of these verses is to give a clear view, to demonstrate, to put the love of God beyond question. If He loved us THEN he’ll love us NOW.
Jesus said - I will never cast out - Emphatic/very clear/wholehearted “I will most certainly never, ever cast out” I will most certainly never let go, reject, cast off.
Jesus is at work and He is INTERCEDING on our behalf CONSTANTLY! It a manifestation of his heart that He would intercede. Every day, he leans and intervenes on your behalf. So, HIs intercession applies in our lives what He has accomplished at the cross.
We have a friend who is able to give us what we need. His GENTLENESS/CALMNESS/SOOTHING - Reduces the pain and the discomfort. Refreshes/relieves us whether we are IGNORANT or WAYWARD.
Because Jesus was tempted in every way he has a heart that is able to sympathise.
Jesus' joy in serving us and rescuing us
It is impossible for the affectionate heart of christ to be exaggerated or over celebrated.
There’s only ONE place in the four gospels where Jesus tells us about his own heart. Where he pulls back the veil and lets us see into the core of who he is.
Clarity on where to serve often starts with answering the question what needs do I see and how can I meet them?
Through Christ we are totally different people. The Old has Gone, we are now living a new life. We have been raised with him, we are now brand new people. We are glorious and our brand new nature needs to be in the driving seat.
There isn’t a place where Jesus isn’t authorised/allowed to act and rule. No limitation, no restriction. The courage and confidence is the rock solid foundation of the words ALL authority.
Legalism is the attempt to earn acceptance or strengthen God’s love via obedience. Legalism looks wise desirable and attractive, but unlike the freedom found in Jesus, legalism creates harsh self reliance, an undesirable life, a tight unattractive restrictive life.
COLOSSIANS 2:6-15- The full deity of Christ, and His sufficiency in salvation by faith. For us: do we believe in Christ for our fulness? What other “false gods” are we tempted to add on? What other “gods” are we using as substitute saviours?
The suffering of Paul but the mystery of CHRIST:” in YOU the hope of Glory” as an encouragement. For us: How does believing in “Christ in us the hope of Glory” impact our daily lives? COLOSSIANS 1:24-2:5
A vision Sunday talk based on the documentary Sir Alex Ferguson - Never Give In. The first battle is in our beliefs. God believes in us more than we do ourselves. He wants to persuade and convince us as a local church that We Can Win The league.
Colossians 1:15-23 is about taking a step back and seeing the bigger picture of who Jesus is and what He has achieved.
Identity is who we believe we are - Identity shapes our behaviour - the way we live. Not modify your behaviour - but know who you actually are. What Jesus has done - who we now are - This is how to live as a community shaped by Jesus.
The only way we will be able to celebrate our diversity and at the same time pursue absolute unity is though alignment with the culture of heaven.
Our life and our story is our gift to the world. Jamie tells 11 stories about his experience of the person of Holy Spirit.
Philippians 4:10-23 is a remarkable passage! Paul could have just written a simple “thank you!”, but instead it turned out to be a great insight into what generosity is about and reveals a lot about Paul’s attitude to money and how to find the secret to contentment in life in poverty or abundance.
A call to Christ-centred mature community
This is the great reversal. This is normal Christianity. This is the treasure in the field. Becoming a Christian means discovering that Christ is a Treasure Chest of joy, pleasure and satisfaction.
The believer is invited into the incredible adventure and privilege of giving our all for the gospel.
Surrendering to God’s willing and doing is a choice, not God doing magic but our conscious mental decision. When we decide to live a certain way and make it an act of our will to follow His will, we discover that the power behind that decision is Holy Spirit. WE are NOT alone.
Philippians 2:1-11. Unity with one another is made possible through humility. Having the same mindset as Christ is how the Kingdom is extended and gospel is advanced.
Holy Spirit wants us to see the demonstration of the love of God at the Cross, and He wants to make this demonstration of love real to us. (Romans 5:5-)
Paul's prayer for the Philippians. Everything is ultimately for the praise and the glory of God
HANNAH: Prayer answered- Promises fulfilled. How often God’s promises come to fruition through impossible circumstances!
Philippians is a remarkable encouraging letter, sent by Paul and from his prison cell, to the Philippians church who are encountering resistance and persecution. An exhortation to follow Christ’s example of humility and servanthood and to press on rejoicing knowing that our citizenship is in heaven.
This is a striking/confusing story. Jesus loves Lazarus, yet oddly when he hear’s that he is sick He chose not to rush but instead He waits. Jesus knew what this delay would mean. He loved this family therefore He delayed. We are invited to see that this is LOVE.
Healing a blind man in Jerusalem
Exploring two clips from the film Toy Story 4 to answer the question: How to see ourselves through God's eyes, instead of defining ourselves by our past or our comparing ourselves to others? God wants us to see our spectacular worth... Clip One https://youtu.be/DB19xgNSZ30 Clip Two https://youtu.be/vNALymvxoDU…
