Die Gesänge tragen die Namen der antiken griechischen Musen.Ein Treck deutscher Flüchtlinge zieht, den Feind auf den Fersen, ostwärts, überquert den Rhein und nähert sich dem Ort der Handlung im Sommer kurz vor der Getreideernte.
