Yet another showrunner joins Jason and Joel on the podcast; this time it’s Dan Goor, co-creator of FOX’s Golden Globe winner Brooklyn Nine-Nine. We talk about the show and Dan’s career, and also a few other TV goings-on:

  • Dan’s had an interesting career, starting with Jon Stewart’s early Daily Show days, then moving to Late Night with Conan O’Brien to Parks & Rec. We talk about how he went from almost going to medical school to working with Mike Schur on two of TV’s best comedies (00:00 – 25:30) ,
  • Then we talk about the genesis of Brooklyn Nine-Nine, including how they managed to get Andre Braugher to play Capt. Holt, and why his silences are the funniest parts of the show. We also talk about the fun cast, how Andy Samberg became available, how the show was very procedural in the first half of the season (Dan says it was on purpose), how early they knew about the childhood friendship between Sandberg and Chelsea Peretti, the importance of cast chemistry, and which guests from the first season we may see in the second. We also talk about how long Samberg’s character Jake Peralta will actually be undercover for the FBI, which is where they left things at the end of season 1 (25:30 – 53:35),
  • Then we talked about the other shows Dan watches, which was a good way for us to transition into a discussion about the Game of Thrones finale without Joel needing to participate much (after he endures being called a “fool” by Dan… kiddingly, he hopes) (53:35 – 1:03:26),
  • Before Dan leaves, though, we talk a little about Veep and Silicon Valley, and we “spoil” Orphan Black for him (he’s only through season 1). Then we put oodles of pressure on Dan by talking about how B99′s post-Simpsons slot this year should give the show a boost (1:03:26 – 1:12:13),
  • After Dan leaves (and 2 days pass), we pick things up again by talking in very vague terms about the Fargo finale and why Joel has fallen way behind on the show (1:12:13 – 1:20:29) ,
  • Then we talk a little about how the reviews for Orange is the New Black seem to vary between the immediate “it’s as good as ever!” reviews and the ones a week or so later that say “it’s still good, but…” (1:20:29 – 1:28:00),
  • Then we discuss Chelsea Handler’s new deal with Netflix, which includes a topical talk show that will start in 2016. We wonder how a topical show will work on Netflix, where users are more attuned to just watching whenever, and whether Handler is the right person with whom Netflix should be trying this out (1:28:00 – 1:37:00),
  • Then we discuss a little bit about tonight’s return of Rectify on Sundance TV, and how a show like that really, really needs to give viewers a refresher before its season premiere (1:37:00 – 1:43:40),
  • Finally, we talk about the season finale of Louie and how Louis C.K. is really making a show that defies the Internet Overthinking Machine’s attempts to figure it out (1:43:40 – 2:00:21).

You can listen to the podcast above (if you don’t hear anything, fiddle with the volume slider), download it via this link, subscribe to our RSS feed, or subscribe via iTunes. You can also find us on the Stitcher radio app for smartphones and iPads. By the way, the bumper music is “Trevor Trailer Trash” from the late, great band Cropduster.
